    Corked Again: Appo Cork Trays

Next time someone asks you to put a cork in it, make it a cork tray instead. Appo Cork Trays are a great way to repurpose some of those empty wine and beverage bottles you’re forever throwing out. Slide an Appo into the neck to transform the vessel into an eye-catching centerpiece or serving tray for hors d’oeuvres (also known as appetizers and finger food). They also work well for creating nifty tabletop or shelf displays.

The tray is made from renewable and durable cork, a substance with the practical benefit of simultaneously resisting heat, moisture, and cold to a degree unmatched by most materials. A tray measures 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter. Designed by Carlo Trevisani.

    Combine: A Portable Picnic Basket

Brazilian design company Bold announced this week Combine, an all-in-one picnic basket for transporting family-style meals. During the product’s presentation at Rio+Design, we were struck by the combination of sharp design, eco-consciousness and material innovation. Combine features Bambootube, a fibrous material made from bamboo and rice husks, and the design looks to the ubiquitous Indian dabbawala lunch tin. Cups, plates and bowls stack into a single column that is wrapped up and carried with a silicone net. Once you set up your spread, the silicone becomes a fashionable mat.

Set the 25-piece set on the table as you like it, or use just use certain items from the stack for smaller gatherings. With eleven brilliant colors to choose from, we imagine heads will turn at your next repast.

MODULAR MATZAH: LAURA COWAN SEDER PLATES

Noted Israeli metal designer Laura Cowan designed the plates in her traveling Dune Seder Plate set with a distinctly curved profile to evoke the rolling dunes of the Sinai desert where, as the Passover story goes, the Israelites made their journey out of Egypt. There is also a travel version that comes in a metal box suitable for transport.

Plates measure 4 x 4 inches, come 6 to a set and include a small round dish for the egg that attaches to the Beitsah tray by a hidden magnet to prevent the egg from rolling away. Sets are available in two finishes: all Stainless Steel, or a mix of Stainless Steel and Anodized Aluminum. Each plate is hand-crafted and signed by the designer.

MAKE MINE MODULAR: ENKAJA MIXOLOGY SYSTEM

Our bartending at home doesn’t extend too far beyond pouring 7Up and Seagram’s Seven into the glass at the same time. But we might be more eager to experiment if the bottles actually did the mixing for us, and guaranteed a perfect drink every time. That’s the concept behind Enkaja, a clever packaging proposal that puts spirits, sodas, juices, and more in modular canisters that can be snapped together to create a range of cocktails. Think of it as mix-and-match mixology.

The concept, developed by the Dublin-based designers at Tatabi Studio, separates 24 common cocktail components into three categories: “bases,” “spirits,” and “touches.” The first consists of typical mixers like Coke, cranberry juice, and lemonade. Spirits include all the usual suspects. And touches range from Cointreau and bitters to chocolate and lime. Each component is stored in a short cylindrical container with a plug on the top; when stacked, the foil seal on top of the plug breaks and the liquids mix together. Combine a spirit with a base and add a touch on top – using the included guidebook as a reference, or just following your own curious palette – and you’ve got yourself an idiot-proof cocktail.

Yes, you will be a better party guest in the long run if you just learn to mix a few classics the regular way and, admittedly, Enkaja ignores the sweet satisfaction that comes from concocting a good drink all on your own. But if LEGO has taught us anything, it’s that snapping things together is irresistibly fun, and we have to imagine that snapping things together while drunk (things that get you drunk, no less!) is satisfying in its own right. In fact, it’s that simple joy of stacking that gave rise to Enkaja in the first place. “When we were kids,” the Tatabi team explained, “there were these interchangeable pens that every kid wanted to have for drawing. In one pen you had different options and was really handy.” While waxing nostalgic about that most-coveted school supply, it occurred to the team that the same idea might work for the spirit market.

In addition to being a novel take on mixing, the designers think the system could encourage unadventurous imbibers like ourselves to branch out a bit more. “Our idea is to give the people the possibility to explore,” they state. The decision to use chemical symbols on the packaging was a way to visually reinforce that idea of experimentation.

Of course, for Enkaja to work, you’d have to find a single company that was able produce every ingredient included in the system, or find a number of drink makers willing to forgo their own brands and bottles for Enkaja’s proprietary containers. Neither seems especially likely. But that’s okay, we like the idea anyway.

Modern Table Setting: Alessi Ape Aperitivo Set

Modern Table Setting Alessi Ape Aperitivo Set

Present your hors d’oeuvres in a landscape as visually attractive as the food is tasty. Italian designer Giulio Iacchetti created the Ape Aperitivo Set for Alessi’s 2012 collection, and you’d be hard pressed to find a modern table setting design as flexible and handsome as this one.
Modern Table Setting Alessi Ape Aperitivo Set
The Alessi Ape Aperitivo set includes a bowl and spoon for mixed nuts, a container for olives, nuts and other small items, a toothpick holder, a bowl suitable for chips and breads, and a wood cheese board. The varying heights and profiles of the different components are coordinated to allow them to nest closely together, but they work just as well spread apart.

Great for home or bar table, Ape is the latest in a series of elegant cocktail products Alessi has brought forth since the 1950s. Made in Italy from 18/10 stainless steel, thermoplastic resin and wood. Wood cheese board measures approximately 8 inches (20.3 cm) across. Wouldn’t it look great next to your Alessi Programma 8 Cheese Server at your next cocktail party?

New Stuff Mondays: Modular Kids Lunch Boxes

Modular kids lunch box and container set

In an eco-conscious world, it’s difficult to rationalize using disposable food holders for your kids lunch day after day. Neither is it fun for kids to have their food squashed into a mushy mess because they’re packed in a soft pouch and buried under a lot of other kids lunch boxes at school. Oh, and did we mention the hassle of trying to clean out lunch pouches when they can’t go in a dishwasher?

Time to bag the baggies and the pouches, parents! This adorable modular kids lunch box and container system solves all these problems, and more. Instead of bags, store your child’s food in recyclable, bpa-free plastic containers.

Modular kids lunch boxes and container set
Use one of four different assortments of small, medium or sandwich-sized containers inside the box – they’ve been designed to fit perfectly each way. To keep food fresh, place the custom built icepack inside the box before closing.

Each box comes with one large and two small containers, faceplates and covers and an icepack. You can also get a set of medium sized containers and an optional drink holder to match your child’s box. Finally, decorate the covers with one of six different themes:

And for you folks living in (or nostalgic for) MODULE R’s home borough of Brooklyn, there are even themes for a couple of our local schools!

    Prefab Confab on Brooklyn Waterfront

We couldn’t help noticing this prefab confab happening right down the street from our flagship Brooklyn store. So here it is:

Brooklyn-based art cooperative United Photo Industries is creating a temporary “photographic village” called Photoville out of 30 shipping containers in Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 3 Uplands for nine days this summer, with the promise that “central to the Village will be a communal beer and food garden serving chilled brews and artisanal snacks.”

Gothamist reports that Photoville will exhibit its “celebration of photography” from June 22 to July 1. The event comprises a mix of exhibitions, lectures, hands-on workshops, nighttime projections, a mini dog run with the “Paws Wall of Fame” and beer garden provided by Brooklyn Brewery “that will create a photographic destination like no other.” A half-dozen or so food truck vendors will also be on-hand, via the New York Food Truck Association.

The Photoville website describes its mission as “a Brooklyn-born, art-presenting cooperative dedicated to identifying, harnessing and occasionally conjuring unexpected exhibition opportunities. All in the name of fostering conversation, championing new directions in photography and cultivating ties within an ever-expanding, globe-trotting community of photographers.”

    Sounds pre-fabulous to us.

SWEET PLAY from Elsa Lambinet on Vimeo.

Developed in partnership with world-famous Swiss chocolatier Blondel, Sweet Play by designer Elsa Lambinet is a modular confectionery system that allows for the development of customizable yummies. The system is based on three components: the structural bed (available in three models and in dark, white or milk chocolate); a top-down recess for inserting an accent sweet; and an interior recess for inserting still more flavor enhancers.

    Brava, Elsa!
